What is an End of Life Doula?
End of Life Doula & Interim Doula
EOLD: An End of Life Doula is a holistic (meaning: whole – mind, body, spirit) and a palliative role. It expands the client and family’s confidence to receive physical, spiritual, emotional and intentional care. EOLD’s bring an authentic healing presence to their clients which is personalized and professionalized care for anyone, regardless of their diagnosis or environment at the end stages of life. Clients, home and family caregivers, clinical and hospital staff and senior health care workers benefit from understanding and supporting the role of an EOLD as they work alongside each other for the benefit of patients and clients.
Interim Doula: “Interim” means provisional or temporary. Sometimes people who are facing the end of life process still have a lot of life in them. Interim Doula Care is palliative care that is provided earlier in the process, typically closer to diagnosis, for people who may need extra help on a temporary basis. This is a good time to get to know the client and family so when the end of life does come, you are already a trusted member of their end of life community.
In a nutshell: Whether you are offering interim care or constant care during the end of life process, this work focuses on companionship, compassionate service, palliative care, the essential physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological support, and proficiency on how to navigate every corner of the end of life process, from diagnosis to end of life celebrations.

* What is the difference between Palliative care and Hospice Care: As defined by Medline Plus Medical Encyclopedia (2016), "Both palliative care and hospice care provide comfort. But palliative care can begin at diagnosis, and at the same time as treatment. Hospice care begins after treatment of the disease is stopped and when it is clear that the person is not going to survive the illness."

How are we different from the others?
Earthside is not a “weekend retreat” certification program, nor are we an online program. We are experienced and passionate advocates for the End of Life process who train Utah locals. We want our students to have complete and unparalleled training for their investment. We are here, in person, to mentor you through your entire process! You can rest assured that when you complete our live, in-depth trainings, you have the very best knowledge and practice to put towards your clients. We want the end of life community to have the very best… the kind of compassionate companionship we would want when facing our own end of life process.

Our Program Details:

Remember: Certifying in our program is an investment. You are learning a valuable skill. This investment will pay off as you become a trusted member of the End of Life Community. Our course fees are fair and considerably UNDER market value, especially with the discounts we offer. We break the costs down for you HERE so that if you have a food handlers, blood borne pathogen, or some of the books already, then you aren't paying so much out of pocket. The cost of the certification, student manual and first 2 year membership are included in your tuition.
Earthside believes in being completely transparent so you have ALL the information you could need or want.
Our Curriculum is 4 days total - approximately 2 "lessons" per Class.

LESSON 2 : You will learn about the client companionship and compassionate service aspects of this career, active listening and communication skills. You will learn about the "pain body" and how to identify it and deal with it. Trusting your gut, ergonomics, self care, life-work balance and the potential risks and hazards of this profession are more of this weeks lesson... and much much more including a possible guest speaker....
LESSON 3 : This lesson you learn about the process of death, identifying discomfort, practical comfort measures, guided meditations, cultural awareness & sensitivity, Family rituals, advocacy, legacy projects and the 5 senses... and as always... much much more!
LESSON 4 : This lesson you learn about about the legalities surrounding this profession as well as the end of life documents you will need to understand. We go more into depth on self-care techniques as well as compassion fatigue, your caregivers "Bill of Rights", a life stress test, coping with stress and burnout, CF Prevention toolkit and identifying elder/client abuse and what we can do to help... and much more...
LESSON 5 : This lesson you learn how to process death with clients and family members. You learn how to understand their grief and its stages (which are more than you think), We learn what "holding space" actually means and how to do it, and what the signs are someone is about to pass. Another guest speaker will grace our classroom this week.
LESSON 6 : This lesson we learn about the history/modern aspects of what a "funeral" is and how we can help our clients prepare. You will get an extensive checklist to help with this as well as vigil/memorial and life celebration planning. You will learn about different religions and religious guidelines for cultural sensitivity, burial options and another guest speaker. Field Trip anyone???
LESSON 7 : This lesson is a tough one. Its why we put it all into one week. We navigate the corners of children's death, stillbirth, accidents and terminal illness. We also learn about when a child loses a parent and also suicide. This week I come armed with plenty of tissues. We also have a social worker there that will be navigating with us through this weeks lesson.
LESSON 8 : This is the final lesson. We learn the business in's and out's of being an End of Life Doula. We give you templates of the business material and forms you will need and we talk about invoicing and expense sheets etc. We talk about the local and federal regulations of paperwork and what you might need/want in your go-to Doula bag.
