Huffington Post has written a terrific article about End of Life Doula's and how this profession is helping people in the end of life community.
"Doula" literally means "a woman who serves" but this profession is not just for "women". Anyone can be an End of Life Doula. Some have even coolly coined the term "Dudela" to include a masculine angle to the title. But ultimately, whether you are male of female, we are end of life "Companions".

Earthside supports the advancement of the End of Life Doula (EOLD) profession and we have meetings and voices lobbying on Capital Hill to fine tune certification requirements in Utah. Fine tuning these requirements will ultimately enhance the End of Life Doula training that is out there by holding them to a higher standard and will hopefully allow End of Life Doula's to be reimbursed by insurance companies. If we can fine tune this in Utah, then through our concentrated efforts, other states will follow suit! It is a process, and as of today's date, there aren't any official regulations set for Birth, Postpartum or End of Life Doula's in Utah, however some insurance companies will reimburse for Birth Doula services. We want to see this happen for End of Life Doula's as well.
The EOLD profession literally deals with life and death and we at Earthside believe that the programs that are available "out there" aren't doing the End of Life Community justice. We want to see that EOLD's are held to a higher standard through certification by an accredited source. We aim to be that source! Stay tuned for more exciting things to come...!!!
Hello! Welcome to Earthside's blog page!
We hope you will come back often and see the new and exciting things we are accomplishing.
We begin our journey by offering End of Life Doula Certification classes for Utah residents. We thoroughly train our students to be End of Life Doula's as we personally mentor them every step of the way through our program. We do not offer on-line classes. We believe that the End of Life Doula should have better training available that consists of more than a weekend retreat or an impersonal online course. We oversee the entire process and facilitate the volunteer hours needed to gain our certification and mentor our student members long after the class has ended. We also have monthly think tank/coffee pow-wows so that our students have the chance to interact with each other and gain professional relationships to support each other. Earthside believes in building a compassionate caregiving Community, not in promoting Competition in this industry.
End of Life Doula's do not compete with other end of life professions, such as Hospice or Hospital staff. We are there to support Hospice and other caregivers and offer compassionate service and companionship to those who need us. Hospice is a medical profession. End of Life Doula's are not.
Earthside also facilitates Caregiver Wellness/Compassion Fatigue workshops for businesses such as Assisted Living Homes, Home Health and Hospice, Hospitals, Veterinarian offices, Therapists, etc...
There are many other areas of Earthside in the works.... stay tuned for those!!
